Luca will be working with a school for orphaned or disadvantaged children in Arusha, Tanzania named Lohada to design an effective and lasting program that would help keep girls in school.
Luca has a close connection with this organization, as his mom helped found it 20 years ago when she met a local woman in Arusha. This woman is Happiness. Happiness was collecting the children of the homeless off the streets of Arusha and teaching them in a small classroom, having convinced a local man to lend it to her. She would visit the bread factory to ask for day-old bread in order to feed the children she gathered. She did all of this while raising her own five children. Now, with the help of my mom and many other volunteers, she runs a school of more than 200 impoverished kids from Arusha's slums that strives to provide the tools they need for a bright future.
An effective and lasting girl's education program is vital for a school like Lohada, as the young girls at Lohada are especially in need of this curriculum. The society they live in doesn't promote girls' education as much as countries like Spain do. Girls there face many obstacles that impede them from staying in school and going to colleges such as the lack of information that leads to early pregnancies, misogynistic social constructs, and high rates of rape. A girl's "Stay in School" program would go a long way to help these young girls succeed.
My CAS project will consist of me collaborating with the organization's board of directors while conducting a lot of research to start this "Stay in School" program. The school will need either tangible tools or resources such as trained teachers for this program and will need to pay to acquire them. To satisfy this need, I will be fundraising for the program through the Holiday Giving campaign. 18 ASV kids in Valencia and their families will be making goods to sell for the holiday season and all proceeds will be split between this project and Marc's CAS project (more info in the google form).
If you would like to donate to the cause, you can do so by purchasing items for the holiday season through the Google Form or by donating to either of the organizations directly. If you are interested in helping make goods to sell for the cause, please contact me at lucaglickman@gmail.com
